Chennai, Aug 5:
Tamil Nadu recorded its highest-ever electricity demand in July 2026, driven by an intense heatwave, warm nights, and a weak southwest monsoon, pushing both peak load and consumption to record levels.
Official data showed that peak power demand touched an all-time high of 21,724 MW on July 14, while daily energy consumption reached a record 475.447 million units (MU) on July 17. The State’s total electricity consumption for the month rose to 13,807 MU, marking an 11.5% increase from 12,382 MU recorded in July 2025.
Weather experts said July 2026 was among the warmest in over three decades, with above-normal temperatures and high humidity leading to increased use of air conditioners, fans, and other cooling appliances across households, commercial establishments, and industries.
Power consumption crossed 400 MU on 30 out of 31 days, while it exceeded 450 MU on 14 days. Peak demand remained above 20,000 MW on 26 days, indicating sustained high usage throughout the month.
The demand also exceeded projections in the Load Generation Balance Report, which had estimated a peak of 20,619 MW and monthly consumption of 13,193 MU.
Despite the surge, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited managed to maintain uninterrupted power supply across the State. Officials attributed this to strong wind and solar power generation, along with efficient grid management.
The record demand highlights Tamil Nadu’s growing energy needs and underscores the critical role of renewable energy in supporting the State’s expanding power requirements.
