Chennai, Aug 6:
A city court has issued a warrant for the arrest of former Tamil Nadu minister K. Ponmudi in connection with a hate speech case linked to alleged controversial remarks on Saivism, Vaishnavism, and women.

The case stems from a speech delivered by Ponmudi at an event held in Chennai in April 2025, where he allegedly made statements that sparked controversy and drew criticism for hurting religious sentiments and promoting hatred.

Following the incident, a private complaint was filed by Chennai Corporation councillor Uma Anandhan, seeking action against Ponmudi under charges of promoting religious enmity and offending religious beliefs. The George Town court had taken cognisance of the complaint and initiated proceedings.

Ponmudi had earlier approached the Madras High Court seeking to quash the case. However, the High Court dismissed his plea on July 2, allowing the trial to proceed.

When the matter came up for hearing before Judge Sundar Pandian at the George Town court, a petition was filed on behalf of Ponmudi seeking exemption from personal appearance. The court rejected the plea.

Subsequently, the judge ordered the police to arrest Ponmudi and produce him before the court on or before September 2. The hearing in the case has been adjourned to the same date.
