Dhaka, Aug 6:

Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan’s residence in Magura came under attack on Wednesday evening, hours after he joined a virtual press interaction addressed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from Delhi.

According to police, unidentified miscreants hurled stones and bricks at the house, damaging windows and attempting to set the property on fire. Local reports suggested petrol bombs were used, though authorities have not officially confirmed this. No injuries were reported.

The incident occurred around 8:45 pm, with residents describing loud explosion-like sounds during the attack. Police personnel were later deployed outside the residence, and an investigation is underway to identify those involved.

The attack followed Shakib’s participation in a media interaction organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia, where Hasina defended her government’s handling of the 2024 unrest and termed the uprising a “planned regime change”.

Bangladesh continues to witness heightened political tensions after Hasina’s removal from power.   Shakib, a former Awami League MP from Magura-1, has not returned to Bangladesh since the political upheaval. Multiple cases have been filed against him, and he has stated he would return only if assured of safety.
