Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Founder Vijay’s wife Sangeetha on Friday withdrew the divorce plea filed against him following which the Chengapattu Family Court treated the case as closed.
Both Vijay and Sangeetha appeared before the court via video-conferencing during which she said she has decided to withdraw the divorce plea.
Accepting this, the Chengalpattu Family Court Judge treated the case as closed.
The court during the earlier hearing on June 15, had adjourned to today (August 7), the divorce petition filed by Sangeetha seeking dissolution of the marriage alleging that he was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress. The adjournment on that day was necessitated as both Vijay and Sangeetha did not appear before the court through video conferencing when the case was taken up for hearing by Chengalpattu Family Court Judge Sujatha.
When both of them appeared today, the case was treated as closed following Sangeetha’s decision to withdraw the divorce plea.
The couple have been married for 27 years. Sangeetha filed a petition seeking divorce on grounds of infidelity on February 24 before the Chengalpattu District Principal Sessions Court. The case was later transferred to the Chengalpattu Family Court.
In her first 12-page petition filed in December 2025 and made public in February this year raising doubts about its timing as Vijay and his nascent TVK was testing the electoral fortunes for the first time, Sangeetha has sought alimony and the right to reside in their matrimonial home in Neelankarai. She has also raised issues related to the marriage in her filing.
After filing the divorce plea, actor-politician Vijay’s wife had on March 7, had filed a second petition before the Family Court seeking financial support and accommodation.
The petition was part of the divorce plea seeking dissolution of her marriage solemnized on August 25, 1999 under Sec 27 (1)(a)(b)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, alleging that Vijay was having extra marital relations with an actress, besides payment of fair and reasonable permanent alimony, commensuare with his income and social standing.
The petition filed on December 3, 2025 was leaked to the media in February this year at a time the actor-turned-neta was being targetted for the Karur stampede and the controversy over getting censorship certificate for his swansong film ‘Jana Nayagan” which had failed to hit the screens during the Pongal festival in January and was mired in a legal wrangle.
Sangeetha in her latest plea had stated that she currently has no independent residence and described herself as “homeless and requested the court to direct Vijay to provide appropriate maintenance and permanent alimony. The petition also seeks continued residence in the matrimonial home or an equivalent arrangement until the case is resolved.
In her divorce plea, she had contended that though there were some occasional difficulties in their married life, both of them had managed and continued their life together.
She said, however, in April 2021 she came to know that Vijay was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress and this has caused her deep emotional pain and mental suffering, amounting to betrayal and violation of marital trust.
”Though Vijay initially assured that he would end the relationship with the actress, he continued the adulterous association without remorse subjecting me to prolonged mental cruelty”, Sangeetha said in the divorce plea, adding, though efforts were made to resolve the issue amicably between September 2021 and February 2022, no resolution was reached and the matter was deferred considering the children’s education and emotional well-being.
She alleged that Vijay thereafter had increasingly neglected her emotionally, mentally and physically, distanced from conjugal relations, excluded her from his social and professional life and deliberately distanced himself.
