Chennai, Aug 8:
Security has been significantly tightened at Chennai International Airport ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, with authorities implementing a five-layer security system from August 7 to August 20.
The enhanced arrangement replaces the earlier three-layer security setup and includes intensive screening of passengers and baggage at entry points. Restrictions have also been imposed on carrying items such as liquids, jam, halwa, pickles and oil bottles in hand baggage.
Armed personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), along with bomb detection squads and sniffer dog teams, have been deployed across key areas, including terminal buildings, entry gates and aircraft parking zones. Continuous patrols and surveillance have been intensified as part of the high-alert measures.
Officials involved in security operations have been directed not to avail leave during this period to ensure uninterrupted deployment. Chennai City Police have also stepped up vigil outside the airport premises.
All vehicles and passengers entering the airport are undergoing stringent checks, while the existing restriction on visitor entry remains in force. Special entry passes for those accompanying or receiving VIPs have been further curtailed.
Passengers Advised to Arrive Early
Airport authorities have advised domestic passengers to arrive at least 90 minutes before departure, while international travellers are requested to reach the airport at least three-and-a-half hours in advance due to additional screening procedures.
Authorities have reiterated that the ban on flying drones, using high-powered laser lights and releasing gas-filled balloons in and around the airport remains in effect. Passengers have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel during checks.
