Chennai, Aug 10:
Chennai city and its neigbouring districts has been experiencing rainfall during the last couple of days, with heavy spells during late evening hours, thanks to the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over North coastal Tamil Nadu, which has brought down the mercury level by a few degrees, even as the Met office said the similar weather pattern would continue for the next few days.
The Chennai city and suburbs and adjoining districts of Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram and Western Ghat regions had been getting rains for the last few days.
The spells, which were quite heavy during nights and was accompanied by gusty winds and thunder, not only led to drop in temperature but also ensured that the weather conditions remained relatively pleasant.
Met office said yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation now lay centred over North Coastal Tamil Nadu at 5.8 km above mean sea level.
Under its influence, moderate rain is likely at isolated places with thunderstorm and lightning accompanied by gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph to occur at one or two places over Western Ghat districts, North Coastal Tamil Nadu districts and Puducherry till August 13.
Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at one or two places over rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area till August 15.
There would be no large change in maximum temperatures with slight increasing tendency during day till August 13 over North Interior Tamil Nadu; while it would near normal over rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area.
Maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal by 2-3 Deg C at isolated pockets during day over North Interior Tamil Nadu; near normal over rest Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area during the same period. .
The forecast for Chennai city and its neighbourhood was that the sky conditions would be partly cloudy with light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning likely to occur during evening/night hours.
Meanwhile, Coimabtore district and Pallikaranai in Chennai recorded the highest of 6 cm of rain each during the last 24 hrs ending at 0830 hrs this morning, followed by and Ambattur, Medavakkam (dist Chennai) Chinnakalar (dist Coimbatore) 5, Valparai PTO (dist Coimbatore) 5 each, 14 Medavakkam (dist Chennai) Kalavai (dist Ranipet) Ammoor (Walajah Railway) (dist Ranipet) Raja Annamalaipuram (dist Chennai), Wallajah (dist Ranipet) Sholayar (dist Coimbatore) Adyar (dist Chennai) 4 each.
