Chennai, Aug 11:
The proposed 179-km Chennai-Cuddalore railway line via the East Coast Road (ECR) could significantly improve rail connectivity along Tamil Nadu’s rapidly developing coastal belt, linking several important towns and tourist destinations.
The proposed line is expected to connect Mahabalipuram, Cheyyur, Marakkanam and Puducherry, besides providing a direct rail link towards Cuddalore.
The project could strengthen public transport connectivity along the ECR, reduce dependence on road travel and provide a boost to tourism, trade and economic activity in the coastal region.
The proposed alignment is also expected to improve access to Mahabalipuram’s heritage attractions, Puducherry’s tourism hubs and emerging urban centres along the ECR, while opening up better connectivity for residents in the coastal districts.
