Sri Lanka’s overwhelmingly positive perception of India is more than a favourable statistic; it is a reflection of the depth of the relationship between the two neighbours. With 79 per cent of Sri Lankans expressing a favourable view of India, up sharply from 65 per cent in 2024, the survey offers an encouraging indication that India’s standing in the island nation has strengthened. That 63 per cent also regard India as a key ally reinforces the importance of the relationship.

Much of this goodwill has been built through India’s response during Sri Lanka’s severe economic crisis in 2022. India’s financial and humanitarian assistance, including credit lines and development support, demonstrated that its neighbourhood policy could translate into tangible help when it mattered most. Such support is likely to have created a sense of trust that cannot be built through diplomacy alone. India’s development assistance, which has exceeded $7.5 billion, has further strengthened people-to-people and institutional ties.

The challenge now is to convert this goodwill into a durable, mutually beneficial partnership. India must remain sensitive to Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and aspirations while continuing to support its economic recovery, infrastructure, energy and development needs. For Sri Lanka, closer ties with India offer an important source of stability and opportunity. The survey should therefore be viewed not merely as a diplomatic success for India, but as an opportunity for both countries to deepen a relationship rooted in trust, geography and shared interests.
