Chennai,  Aug 20:

The Tamil Nadu government has increased the annual coverage under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh, providing greater financial protection to eligible beneficiaries facing high-cost medical treatment.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on August 19. The fivefold increase in coverage is expected to provide additional financial assistance to families requiring expensive medical procedures and treatments.

The enhanced insurance cover is part of a wider expansion of healthcare facilities in the State. The government has also announced plans to establish a 400-bed multispeciality hospital in Perambur at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore.

New cancer care facilities will also be established as part of the healthcare expansion programme. The measures are aimed at strengthening public healthcare infrastructure and improving access to specialised treatment.

Beneficiaries will be able to avail themselves of the enhanced CMCHIS coverage subject to the scheme’s eligibility criteria, approved treatments and empanelled hospitals.
