Vijay’s son Jason Sanjay is making his entry into Tamil cinema, but not as an actor. With his directorial debut Sigma, he has chosen to remain behind the camera, saying filmmaking has always been his priority.
Speaking about his decision, Jason says acting was never his immediate ambition despite growing up in a family deeply connected to cinema. He had appeared briefly alongside his father Vijay in the Vettaikaaran music video and was also seen in a promotional video for Sigma. However, he says the appearance was only for fun and that his real interest has always been direction.
Jason reveals that filmmaker-actor Alphonse Puthren had once approached him for an acting project, but he chose not to pursue it. For him, directing offers the opportunity to explore the creative process from a broader perspective.
He explains that there is an actor within him too, particularly when he works with performers on set and explains how a particular scene should be performed. However, his immediate priority is to ensure that Sigma reaches audiences successfully. He says he wants to concentrate entirely on the film’s release and its reception before deciding whether he wants to explore acting in the future or continue directing.
Coming from one of Tamil cinema’s most prominent families, Jason has grown up as a keen film enthusiast. Despite being the son of superstar-turned-politician Vijay and Sangeetha Sornalingam, he has largely stayed away from the spotlight and is now attempting to establish an identity of his own within the industry.
Produced by Lyca Productions, Sigma is a heist film starring Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah in the lead roles. Jason Sanjay’s debut has generated considerable interest, particularly because he has chosen filmmaking rather than following his father’s path as an actor.
For now, Jason remains focused on his first film as a director. Whether he eventually steps in front of the camera or continues to tell stories from behind it, he says that decision can wait until Sigma has had its moment with audiences.
