Galle, Aug 21:
Rishabh Pant has become India’s highest run-scorer in the World Test Championship after surpassing Shubman Gill during the ongoing Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
Pant’s 66 off 69 balls in India’s second innings, following his 39 in the first, took his WTC tally to 2,885 runs. He moved 18 runs ahead of Gill, who has accumulated 2,867 runs.
The achievement came despite both batters having played the same number of WTC matches. Pant has reached his tally in 73 innings across 41 matches, while Gill has taken 75 innings to score his 2,867 runs.
Pant’s new position at the top of India’s WTC run charts puts him ahead of several prominent names in the country’s Test batting history. Gill is second on the list, followed by Rohit Sharma with 2,716 runs, Ravindra Jadeja with 2,632 and Virat Kohli with 2,617.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, with 2,543 runs, and KL Rahul, with 2,265, complete India’s top seven WTC run-scorers.
Pant’s WTC record currently includes six centuries and 17 fifties, with a highest score of 146. His 2,885 runs have come at an average of 41.81.
The latest landmark adds another significant achievement to Pant’s Test career, with the wicketkeeper-batter continuing to establish himself among India’s most productive players in the World Test Championship era.
Globally, England’s Joe Root remains the leading run-scorer in WTC history with 6,651 runs from 77 matches.
For India, however, the milestone now belongs to Pant, who has moved to the top of the country’s WTC batting charts after his productive outing in Galle.
