Chennai, Aug 22:
IIT Madras is planning to enter medical education with undergraduate MBBS and postgraduate MD programmes, along with research-oriented PhD courses, as part of an initiative to integrate medicine with engineering and technology.
IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti said the institute plans to establish a medical college and teaching hospital to support the proposed programmes. The institute will have to obtain the necessary approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) before launching the courses.
The proposed medical education ecosystem is aimed at bringing doctors, engineers and researchers together to develop technology-driven solutions for healthcare.
IIT Madras established its Department of Medical Sciences and Technology in 2023 and currently offers a four-year BS programme in Medical Sciences and Engineering.
The proposed expansion into MBBS and MD education would further deepen the institute’s focus on medical sciences, engineering and healthcare technology.
The planned teaching hospital is expected to provide clinical training for students while also supporting medical research and the development of advanced healthcare technologies.
