Chennai, Aug 25:
The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has renewed its demand for conferring the Bharat Ratna on party founder and late leader Captain Vijayakanth, as it marked his 74th birth anniversary with a series of welfare initiatives across Tamil Nadu.
Vijayakanth’s birthday on August 25 is observed by the DMDK as “Poverty Eradication Day”, in recognition of his commitment to helping the underprivileged.
As part of this year’s celebrations, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth distributed welfare assistance on Monday. At the Puratchi Thalaivar MGR School for the Deaf in Ramapuram, she provided lunch and financial assistance of Rs 50,000, continuing the party’s annual initiative.
She also handed over a Rs 1 lakh cheque to the Delhi Tamil Sangam towards educational assistance for poor students.
Several welfare programmes have been planned in Virudhachalam on August 25, including the opening of free tailoring and computer training centres, besides distribution of ironing boxes, sewing machines and educational scholarships to school students.
A free eye screening and treatment camp will also be held at the DMDK headquarters, Captain Alayam, in Koyambedu, Chennai, on Tuesday.
DMDK treasurer L K Sudheesh, deputy secretaries, senior functionaries, district secretaries, party cadres and members of the public participated in the welfare activities.
