New Delhi, Aug 26:
The Indian Council of Medical Research has said that the current increase in H1N1 infections across the country is part of the normal seasonal influenza pattern and that no new strain of the virus has been identified.
ICMR Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl said the virus currently circulating is the familiar Influenza A H1N1 pdm09 lineage that has been present since the 2009 pandemic and has since become an endemic seasonal influenza virus.
He urged the public not to panic, stressing that most infections are mild and self-limiting. According to ICMR surveillance, H1N1 is currently the most commonly detected respiratory infection among people reporting cough and cold symptoms.
Dr Bahl said influenza viruses mutate over time as part of their natural behaviour, but the current rise does not indicate the emergence of a new strain. H3N2, Influenza B Victoria and a small number of COVID-19 cases are also being detected.
He advised people with fever, cough or cold to take adequate rest, remain hydrated, eat properly, maintain hand hygiene and avoid close contact with others. Medical attention should be sought in case of warning symptoms such as breathing difficulty or chest pain.
Elderly people, pregnant women and immunocompromised persons were advised to exercise greater caution and consult doctors regarding influenza vaccination where appropriate.
