Bengaluru, Aug 26:

A surprise inspection at a government hospital in Karnataka has triggered an inquiry after a jailed government officer, who is an undertrial, was allegedly found staying with his girlfriend in a VIP ward.

Officials conducting the inspection reportedly found the undertrial lodged in the special ward despite there being no court permission for an extended hospital stay.

The inspection also reportedly found no serious medical condition that would justify prolonged treatment outside the prison.

The presence of the woman in the VIP ward has raised further questions about possible violations of prison and hospital rules and whether the undertrial had received preferential treatment.

Authorities are examining how the accused was accommodated in the special ward, who authorised the hospital stay and whether officials failed to follow prescribed procedures.

Further action is expected after completion of the inquiry into the alleged irregularities.
