Kanchipuram: Work on a new wooden chariot for the Arulmigu Varadaraja Perumal Temple, also known as the Devaraja Swamy Temple, began on Wednesday at an estimated cost of Rs 4.25 crore.
Ministers S.P.K. Thennarasu and R.V. Ranjith Kumar, along with District Collector Sneha, inaugurated the work at the temple premises. District SP Aravind, Joint Commissioner C. Kumarathurai, Assistant Commissioner Srinivasan, Executive Officer S. Senthilkumar and temple officials were present.
The existing chariot, used during the annual Vaikasi Brahmotsavam, is old and in a dilapidated condition, prompting the temple administration to construct a new one with donor support.
The new chariot will be around 63 feet high and 26 feet wide and will be made using teak and vengai wood. The temple administration said the work would be completed before the next Vaikasi Brahmotsavam.
