India’s bowling plan under scrutiny after Colombo draw

Colombo, Aug 29:

India’s bowling strategy has come under scrutiny after the visitors failed to dismiss Sri Lanka’s lower order on the final day of the second Test in Colombo, allowing the hosts to secure a draw and deny India a 2-0 series sweep.

India had appeared firmly in control for much of the match and were in a strong position to force a victory. However, Sri Lanka’s determined resistance on the final day exposed shortcomings in India’s bowling plans and execution.

The Indian attack struggled to break through the final Sri Lankan partnerships when wickets were most urgently required.

Sri Lanka’s batters adopted a defensive approach, absorbing pressure and frustrating the Indian bowlers as time became India’s biggest enemy.

The result was particularly disappointing for India because the visitors had dominated large portions of the Test and were looking well placed to secure another victory after winning the opening Test in Galle.

India had taken a substantial first-innings lead and subsequently put Sri Lanka under considerable pressure.

However, the failure to complete the job raised questions about the manner in which the Indian attack approached the lower order.

The bowlers were unable to consistently create the kind of pressure required to force mistakes, while Sri Lanka’s batters showed considerable discipline in defending and leaving deliveries.

The draw also had implications for India’s World Test Championship campaign.

India finished the two-Test series 1-0 but missed the opportunity to collect a maximum number of points from the tour. The result leaves them fifth in the WTC standings and facing a demanding road ahead to the 2027 final.

India captain Shubman Gill, however, chose to look at the positives, pointing out that his team had dominated nine of the 10 days of cricket in the series and had performed strongly in difficult overseas conditions.

The Colombo setback nevertheless provides India with an important lesson: domination is not enough in Test cricket unless it is converted into 20 wickets.

The bowling unit will now come under greater scrutiny ahead of India’s next assignments, particularly with the WTC qualification race becoming increasingly competitive.
