Bengaluru,  Aug 31:

A Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Bengaluru has sentenced Syed Fasiur Rehaman, a key accused in the Al-Hind ISIS terror conspiracy case, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 48,000.

The case relates to an alleged conspiracy linked to the proscribed ISIS terrorist organisation and was initially registered by Karnataka Police on January 10, 2020.

The NIA subsequently took over the investigation and re-registered the case on January 23, 2020.

According to the NIA investigation, the conspiracy was allegedly masterminded by Mehaboob Pasha, the prime accused, who conducted meetings at his residence in Gurappanapalya, Bengaluru.

Investigators alleged that the accused discussed plans to carry out targeted killings with the objective of triggering communal riots and advancing the agenda of the ISIS-linked Al-Hind module.

The investigation further alleged that the group sought to establish an ISIS/Daish “wilayah”, or province, in the region.

The NIA has so far filed three chargesheets against 20 accused in the case, all of whom have been arrested.

Rehaman was found to have participated in conspiracy meetings and was also accused of purchasing tents and knives from a Decathlon showroom for jungle-camp training of members of the Al-Hind group.

Investigators had earlier alleged that members of the module conducted reconnaissance of forested areas in Karnataka, including locations around Shivanasamudra in Chamarajanagar district and Gundlupet, to identify possible locations for training camps and hideouts.

Rehaman’s conviction follows the earlier conviction of accused Haneef Khan, who pleaded guilty during the trial and was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 48,000 on July 14.

The trial in the case commenced in October 2025.

The NIA said its investigation is continuing, including efforts to trace an alleged online handler who was involved in planning and coordinating the formation of the module.

The latest conviction represents another step in the prosecution of members of the alleged Al-Hind ISIS conspiracy and comes as investigating agencies continue to examine the network’s recruitment, training and operational links.
