Chennai, Aug 31:
Two newly manufactured Amrit Bharat trains from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai have been handed over to Southern Railway, raising expectations that the new services could soon be deployed on important routes in Tamil Nadu.
The two trains have been manufactured at ICF as part of the Railways’ push to expand the fleet of affordable, high-speed long-distance services.
The new Amrit Bharat trains use push-pull technology, with locomotives positioned at both ends. This enables them to operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph while improving operational efficiency at terminals.
Each train consists of 22 LHB coaches, including 12 reserved coaches, and can accommodate around 1,834 passengers.
Unlike air-conditioned premium services, the trains do not have AC coaches, allowing passengers to travel at comparatively affordable fares while benefiting from faster services and improved onboard facilities.
Passengers and railway user representatives have urged Southern Railway to deploy the newly handed-over trains on routes connecting Chennai with southern districts and Coimbatore.
The demand comes amid growing passenger traffic on several long-distance routes in Tamil Nadu, where conventional express trains often face heavy demand.
Railway officials and user representatives are also expected to examine suitable routes before the trains are introduced into regular service.
The new trains feature improved interiors, including upgraded flooring, seating and berths, snack tables and curtains. ICF is also manufacturing newer versions of Amrit Bharat coaches with additional amenities, including AC facilities and improved interior fittings.
The development further highlights ICF’s expanding role in the manufacture of modern trainsets for Indian Railways. The Chennai-based factory has already emerged as a major production centre for Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains.
