Chennai, Sept 2:
The design of the ongoing Teynampet-Saidapet elevated flyover on Anna Salai has been modified at locations close to two Metro stations to address site-related challenges without reducing the road space available for motorists.
The 3.2-km flyover, being constructed at a cost of Rs 621 crore, is aimed at easing traffic congestion between Teynampet and Saidapet. Work on the project began after the foundation stone was laid in January 2024.
The project has required detailed technical coordination as the flyover is being constructed above the underground Chennai Metro corridor. Experts from Chennai Metro Rail, IIT Madras and technical specialists from the UK and Germany were involved in reviewing the design.
During construction, officials found that the original design did not fully suit actual site conditions near two Metro stations. Consequently, changes were made for a stretch of around 426 metres.
Under the original design, three pillars were proposed, including one in the centre of the road. The revised design removes the central pillar and provides only two pillars along the edges of the road.
Officials said the modification would help retain the existing road width and provide additional space for traffic.
The revised design has received the necessary approval from the Tamil Nadu government and is not expected to increase the overall project cost. The project remains targeted for completion by February 2027.
Around 62% of the flyover work has already been completed. Several utility lines, including electricity cables, drinking water and sewage pipelines and telecommunications connections, have been shifted safely at locations where pillar foundations are being constructed.
The project consists of 132 spans, of which 42 are located near Metro station areas. Soil-strengthening work has also been carried out at 69 locations where the flyover passes above the Metro tunnel corridor.
Officials have faced several challenges during construction, including delays in obtaining gas cylinders required for welding work. Nevertheless, they said the project was progressing as planned.
An IIT Madras-led third-party safety and quality audit is also being undertaken as part of the project.
Once completed, the elevated corridor is expected to improve traffic movement along one of Chennaiās busiest stretches and reduce congestion between Teynampet and Saidapet.
