New Delhi, Sept 3:
India captain Shubman Gill and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah slipped in the latest ICC Test rankings released on Wednesday, while Devdutt Padikkal made a significant jump following his impressive performances in the recent series against Sri Lanka.
Gill dropped two places to ninth among Test batters after managing only one half-century in three innings on India’s tour of Sri Lanka. Despite the decline, he remains among the world’s top 10 batters.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant continues to be India’s highest-ranked batter, holding seventh position. Yashasvi Jaiswal retained his 11th spot and remains just outside the top 10.
Padikkal was the major beneficiary among Indian batters. The left-hander climbed five places to 54th after an outstanding two-Test series against Sri Lanka in which he accumulated 328 runs, including two centuries. His performances strengthened his claim for a regular place in India’s Test set-up.
There was also movement at the top of the bowling rankings. Bumrah slipped from second to third, with Australia’s Mitchell Starc retaining the No. 1 position and New Zealand’s Matt Henry moving into second.
Bumrah’s drop comes after he missed India’s Sri Lanka tour because of a knee injury. He has subsequently been included in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, subject to fitness clearance.
Sri Lanka’s Sonal Dinusha was another major mover, climbing 29 places to 25th among Test batters after his impressive performances against India, including centuries in the second Test at Colombo.
England’s Harry Brook remains at the top of the Test batting rankings, with Australia’s Steve Smith and England’s Joe Root occupying the next two positions.
