New Delhi, Sept 4:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has told former Chennai Super Kings teammate Subramaniam Badrinath that he does not intend to continue as an Impact Player, adding further uncertainty to his IPL future.
Dhoni missed the entire 2026 IPL season due to injury, and questions have continued over whether the veteran wicketkeeper-batter will return for the 2027 season.
According to Badrinath, Dhoni wants to continue as a full-time wicketkeeper if he plays in the next IPL season. This would require him to remain on the field for the full 20 overs rather than using the Impact Player option.
“He has personally told me that he won’t play as an Impact Player. He sees himself as a full-time keeper,” Badrinath said.
Badrinath, however, feels the Impact Player rule could be ideal for Dhoni at this stage of his career. He pointed out that Dhoni’s batting role has become increasingly limited, while keeping for 20 overs places considerable physical demands on him.
The former CSK batter said the reduced workload associated with the Impact Player role could allow Dhoni to continue contributing with his experience and finishing ability.
Dhoni, a five-time IPL-winning captain, handed over the CSK captaincy before the 2024 season. His limited involvement with the bat in recent seasons has led to repeated speculation over his future.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had recently indicated that Dhoni had not told the franchise that he would not play in IPL 2027. Badrinath’s revelation, however, provides a fresh indication of Dhoni’s preferred role should he decide to return.
