Chennai, Sept 4:
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced the creation of new police districts under the Avadi and Tambaram commissionerates as part of measures to strengthen policing and improve law-and-order administration in the rapidly expanding suburban areas of Chennai.
The announcement was made by the Chief Minister in the Assembly while outlining measures aimed at strengthening the State’s police infrastructure.
Under the new arrangement, the existing police jurisdictions under the Avadi and Tambaram commissionerates will be reorganised, with new police districts being formed to improve administrative and operational efficiency.
The move is expected to enable the police department to manage the growing population and expanding residential and commercial areas in the suburbs more effectively. It is also aimed at bringing policing closer to residents and improving the response to law-and-order issues.
The announcement comes alongside a broader expansion of the police force. Vijay has also informed the Assembly that 29,108 police personnel posts would be created, signalling a major strengthening of the State’s policing infrastructure.
The restructuring of the Avadi and Tambaram commissionerates is expected to ease the administrative burden on existing police units and facilitate closer supervision of police stations and personnel in the respective jurisdictions.
With Chennai’s suburbs witnessing rapid urbanisation, the government has been facing increasing demands for stronger policing, traffic management and public safety measures. The creation of additional police districts is intended to address these emerging requirements.
