Accra, Sept 4:
Carlos Queiroz has returned as coach of Ghana, less than two months after stepping down following the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese coach held fresh talks with the Ghana Football Association and the country’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation before agreeing to a new contract.
The Ghana FA said Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars made him well suited to lead the team into its next phase.
Queiroz, 73, was appointed in April after Ghana dismissed Otto Addo following a four-match losing streak. He subsequently guided the team at the World Cup, where Ghana progressed to the Round of 32.
Ghana’s campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the first knockout round. Queiroz stepped down afterwards, saying there was no “complete sporting satisfaction”, although he felt the team had restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars.
During the tournament, Ghana drew with England in the group stage and advanced as one of the best third-placed teams despite losing their final group match against Croatia.
Queiroz has extensive international coaching experience, having previously managed Portugal, Colombia, Iran and Egypt. At club level, he also coached Spanish giants Real Madrid.
His new mandate will focus on preparing Ghana for its upcoming international assignments and strengthening the team ahead of future continental competitions.
The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with an away match against Ivory Coast on September 24, followed by a home game against Gambia three days later.
