Chennai, Sept 8:
The Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR), a 133-km infrastructure project linking Ennore Port with Poonjeri near Mamallapuram, is expected to significantly improve connectivity around the city while easing traffic congestion and strengthening links between ports, industrial centres and major highways.
The project is aimed at creating an alternative high-capacity road corridor around Chennai, allowing freight and long-distance traffic to bypass congested parts of the metropolitan region.
The CPRR corridor stretches from Ennore Port in the northern part of the Chennai region to Poonjeri near Mamallapuram in the south. In doing so, it will connect several important highways, industrial areas and port facilities.
The road is expected to play a major role in improving the movement of goods between industrial clusters and ports. Faster and more direct freight connectivity could also support logistics and manufacturing activities in areas surrounding the city.
The project is particularly significant for Chennai, where rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicle movement have placed considerable pressure on existing roads. A peripheral corridor is expected to help divert heavy and through traffic away from densely populated areas.
The CPRR could also open up new opportunities for regional development by improving access to industrial and commercial zones outside the core city. Better road connectivity could encourage further investment and support the growth of logistics and related economic activities.
The project is being viewed as an important component of Chennai’s long-term transport and infrastructure network, particularly as the metropolitan region continues to expand beyond its traditional urban boundaries.
