Dhaka, Seot 8:
Bangladesh’s High Court has granted bail to Hindu monk and minority rights leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in two more cases, but he is expected to remain in custody because of other pending legal proceedings.
The latest order gives Das bail in two additional cases, taking the number of cases in which he has secured High Court bail to four of six criminal cases, according to reports. His release, however, remains blocked by proceedings in other cases, including a sedition case.
Das was arrested in November 2024 on sedition allegations linked to an alleged disrespect of Bangladesh’s national flag. His arrest triggered protests and heightened communal tensions in the country. He has since remained in detention while facing several cases.
The latest bail order is likely to be closely watched by Hindu community organisations and rights groups, which have repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh. Despite the court granting relief in two more cases, the continuing legal proceedings mean Das is not yet free.
The case has become a politically and communally sensitive issue in Bangladesh, with developments surrounding Das drawing attention in neighbouring India as well.
