CA approves BBL privatisation, Melbourne Renegades up for sale

Melbourne, Sept 9:
Cricket Australia has approved a major overhaul of the Big Bash League, opening the door to private investment and launching a process for the full sale of the Melbourne Renegades in a landmark shift for Australian domestic cricket.
Under the new ā€œself-determinationā€ model, state associations will have greater control over the ownership and future commercial direction of their Big Bash League and Women’s Big Bash League clubs. The Renegades will become the first BBL franchise to be offered for full private ownership.
The move is aimed at giving the BBL greater financial strength and helping Australian cricket compete with the growing commercial power of international T20 leagues, particularly the Indian Premier League. Cricket Australia believes private investment can provide clubs with greater access to capital, commercial expertise and new revenue streams.
The sale process for the Renegades is now expected to begin through an expression-of-interest process. Potential investors are expected to include private-equity groups and parties with links to the global T20 cricket industry. The move could eventually lead to other BBL clubs following the same path.
However, the decision has not received universal support. Cricket New South Wales has strongly opposed the privatisation plan, while Queensland has also expressed reservations. Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia have been more supportive of the move.
Player representation and revenue sharing are also expected to be major issues. The Australian Cricketers’ Association has argued that players should receive a greater share of the financial benefits generated through club sales, while negotiations between the players’ body and Cricket Australia remain unresolved.
Cricket Australia, however, has stressed that the upcoming 2026-27 BBL and WBBL seasons will proceed under the existing arrangements. The ownership changes are expected to have a more visible impact from the 2027-28 season.
The move comes as Cricket Australia attempts to strengthen the long-term financial sustainability of the BBL while protecting the importance of international cricket, particularly Test cricket. The organisation has argued that stronger BBL finances are necessary to keep Australia’s domestic competition competitive in an increasingly crowded global T20 market.
The Renegades sale could therefore become a test case for the future of the entire league. If successful, other clubs could attract private owners and potentially bring significant new investment into Australian cricket. Cricket Australia has estimated that private investment across the BBL could eventually run into the billions of Australian dollars.
