Chennai, Sept 10:
MDMK MP Durai Vaiko has made it clear that his party will not contest the upcoming by-elections to the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies and will instead support the candidates fielded by the TVK-led alliance.
The Election Commission has announced bypolls to two of the seven vacant Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu â Madurantakam and Dharapuram. Elections to the remaining five seats have not been announced because election-related cases concerning those constituencies are pending.
Polling in Madurantakam and Dharapuram is scheduled for October 6, with the filing of nominations beginning on September 10.
Speaking in an interview in Chennai, Durai Vaiko said the MDMK had not contested either Madurantakam or Dharapuram in the previous Assembly election. Therefore, he expected TVK candidates to contest the two seats in the bypolls.
He categorically said that the MDMK would not contest the by-elections.
Durai Vaiko said that whoever is fielded as the candidate of the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance would receive the MDMK’s support for victory.
He also expressed his wish that the Communist parties had joined the alliance. However, he acknowledged that the Left parties had maintained their position and continued to support the TVK government from outside.
Durai Vaiko expressed confidence that the Left parties would eventually become part of the alliance.
