Chennai, Sept 10:
The Tamil Nadu government has initiated steps to acquire land at Madhuramangalam in Kancheepuram district for setting up a semiconductor electronics manufacturing park through SIPCOT.
The proposed park, located near Parandur, is planned at an estimated cost of Rs 175 crore. The project is aimed at attracting large-scale investments in the semiconductor and electronics manufacturing sector and strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position in the industry.
A notification issued by Commissioner of Land Administration Rajesh Lakhoni said around 8.3820 hectares of land would be required for industrial purposes. The lands identified for acquisition have been classified as dry lands and contain neem and coconut trees.
The notification said the land plans would be available for inspection at the offices of the Special District Revenue Officer and Special Tahsildar during working hours.
The move comes after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the semiconductor park in the Assembly under Rule 110. The proposed facility will house semiconductor industries as well as research and development facilities.
The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for around 5,000 people and is projected to give a major boost to Tamil Nadu’s electronics and semiconductor ecosystem.
The location of the proposed park has also attracted attention because Madhuramangalam is close to Parandur and Eganapuram, where villagers had opposed the earlier proposal to acquire their agricultural lands for a second airport for Chennai.
The previous government had proceeded with the airport project despite opposition from residents and acquired around 1,700 acres. The TVK had supported the villagers’ opposition during the Assembly election and subsequently scrapped the airport project after coming to power.
The proposed semiconductor park therefore marks a fresh industrial development in the Parandur region, with the government seeking to use the area for electronics and semiconductor investments.
