Chennai, Sept 10:
DMK leader and Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin has condemned the recent murder of a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary in Chennai, questioning the law and order situation in the city.
In a statement, Udhayanidhi described the incident as shocking and alleged that another brutal murder had taken place in Chennai despite repeated assurances from the government on maintaining law and order.
The remarks came after TVK functionary Kannan was hacked to death by an armed gang in Besant Nagar on September 5. The murder triggered a political controversy, with Opposition parties questioning the government’s handling of law and order.
Police have arrested several persons in connection with the murder. The number of arrests rose to nine on September 8, with three school students among four persons arrested in the latest round.
Udhayanidhi’s criticism comes amid an ongoing political confrontation between the DMK and the ruling TVK over law and order. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had also faced Opposition criticism and defended his government’s record during the Assembly proceedings.
The murder has added to the political debate over public safety in Chennai, with the Opposition demanding effective steps to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of residents.
