Chennai, Sept 11:
The Greater Chennai Police have launched an intensive ‘Operation Special Drive’ against rowdy elements across the city, with efforts underway since Wednesday night to arrest more than 70 persons with criminal backgrounds.
The special operation comes in the wake of two murders reported in Besant Nagar and Tiruvottiyur. Police have intensified surveillance on persons with previous enmity and those suspected of being involved in criminal activities.
As part of the drive, police teams are particularly focusing on habitual offenders, those involved in drug peddling and rowdies allegedly engaged in settlements and other illegal activities. Their movements and recent activities are being closely monitored and preventive as well as arrest measures are being taken wherever necessary.
Police sources said a similar ‘Operation Special Drive’ had been conducted after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government assumed office. The latest operation has now been launched following the two recent murders in the city.
The crackdown is expected to continue in the coming days as the police step up efforts to prevent gang clashes, drug-related offences and other crimes involving known rowdies.
