Mexico City, Sept 12:
Rafael Márquez has taken another major step in his football career, moving from captain of Mexico to coach of the national team with his sights firmly set on the 2030 World Cup.
The former Barcelona star was formally introduced as Mexico’s new coach on Thursday, taking charge after serving as assistant to Javier Aguirre since August 2024.
Márquez’s appointment gives him an opportunity to achieve something that eluded him throughout his playing career — taking Mexico beyond the World Cup quarter-finals.
The 47-year-old defender represented Mexico at five World Cups but was unable to guide El Tri beyond the quarter-final stage. He now wants to change that record from the sidelines.
Márquez said his immediate objective was to qualify for the 2030 World Cup and then attempt to achieve something different with the national team.
He said his experience as a player and his time working under Aguirre had given him a strong understanding of the players, the environment around the national team and the demands of international football.
Márquez’s first assignments will be a series of friendlies in the United States. Mexico will play Colombia on September 26 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, followed by matches against Peru on September 29 in Harrison, New Jersey, the United States on October 3 in Glendale, Arizona, and Chile on October 6 in Los Angeles.
Márquez has also assembled an experienced coaching team. Among his assistants is former Mexico international Andrés Guardado, who played alongside him at four World Cups between 2006 and 2018.
Guardado, who retired as a player in 2023, had been working with Real Betis’ youth setup.
Juan Manuel Lillo and Vidal Paloma have also joined Márquez’s coaching staff, while Xabier Mancisidor has been appointed goalkeeper coach and Pol Lorente will handle physical preparation.
Apart from Guardado, the rest of the coaching staff is Spanish.
Márquez arrives with an impressive playing record. He won the Confederations Cup with Mexico in 1999 and lifted Gold Cup titles in 2003 and 2011.
At club level, he played for Monaco before enjoying a trophy-filled spell with Barcelona.
His transition into coaching began in the youth ranks at Real Alcalá. He later took charge of Barça Atlètic, Barcelona’s reserve team, managing the side for 82 matches over two seasons.
Now, with Mexico, Márquez faces the biggest coaching challenge of his career.
The former captain believes he is not starting from scratch. His experience alongside Aguirre and his familiarity with the national team setup have given him confidence as he attempts to take Mexico to the next level.
For a player who spent five World Cups chasing the dream from inside the pitch, Márquez will now try to fulfil it from the touchline.
