New Delhi, Sept 15:
BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders have welcomed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in all States governed by the NDA before the 2029 Lok Sabha election.
Shah’s announcement has renewed the political debate over the UCC, with BJP leaders describing the move as a major step towards a common legal framework governing personal laws.
The proposed Uniform Civil Code seeks to bring common rules governing areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, replacing different personal laws followed by various religious communities.
Shah has said the NDA governments would work towards implementing the UCC across the 21 States under their administration before the 2029 general election. The announcement has also drawn criticism from Opposition parties, which have questioned the timing and political intent of the proposal.
The BJP and its ideological allies, however, have welcomed the move and reiterated their long-standing demand for a uniform civil law framework.
