Chennai, Sept 17:
DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi on Thursday criticised the police searches at the residence of former School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, alleging that the action was aimed at diverting public attention from issues facing the Tamil Nadu government.
The Chennai Central Crime Branch conducted searches at nine locations in Chennai and Tiruchy on Wednesday in connection with an alleged ₹100-crore fraud case involving promises of securing approvals and recognition for private schools. Police said important documents were seized during the searches and summoned Anbil Mahesh to appear for inquiry on September 18.
In a post on X, Kanimozhi alleged that people had begun questioning what she described as the government’s handling of law-and-order issues and the proposed relocation of residents from Pattinapakkam for the new Secretariat. She also referred to questions surrounding the Chief Minister’s overseas investment trip.
Kanimozhi alleged that the search at Anbil Mahesh’s residence was conducted “as usual” to divert public attention from these issues. She further said that the DMK’s voice could not be suppressed through the use of authority or intimidation and asserted that the party would not yield to such actions.
The allegations came a day after the CCB searches. Anbil Mahesh has also alleged that political considerations were behind the action, while the police investigation is continuing into the private-school approval fraud allegations.
