Chennai, Sept 18:
The Central government has approved the construction of 25,000 houses in Tamil Nadu under the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban scheme.
The Union government has approved a total of 71.55 lakh houses across various States under the scheme. The second phase of the housing programme was announced in 2024 with a target of constructing one crore houses across the country at an estimated cost of Rs 2.50 lakh crore.
Under the scheme, houses will be constructed in 5,206 cities across the country. In Tamil Nadu, 25,000 houses have been approved in 722 urban areas.
According to an official of the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, each house will have an area of around 300 sq ft. The Central government will provide a subsidy of Rs 2.50 lakh towards the total cost of each house, while the remaining amount will be contributed by the Tamil Nadu government.
The second phase of the scheme will also give priority to the use of new construction technologies instead of conventional methods, the official said.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was launched by the Centre in 2015 to provide housing support to eligible people who do not own a house.
