World leaders are gathering in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly amid a concentration of conflicts and humanitarian crises across several regions.
The wars and crises in Iran, Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and Yemen are expected to dominate discussions, alongside climate change, artificial intelligence and the future of international cooperation.
UN officials have described the current international environment as one of deep uncertainty, with governments facing simultaneous security, humanitarian and economic challenges. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for greater international cooperation on issues ranging from armed conflicts to climate change and AI.
The UN has also highlighted the difficulty of sustaining global attention when several major humanitarian emergencies are unfolding at the same time. Officials have particularly warned that Sudan’s crisis risks being overshadowed by conflicts receiving greater international attention.
The General Assembly is expected to provide an important diplomatic forum for discussions on ceasefires, humanitarian access, international security and the changing global order.
