Yemen, Sept 19:
Yemen’s humanitarian crisis is worsening as renewed fighting forces thousands of people to flee their homes, with the United Nations warning of growing risks to civilians.
UN officials said at least 125,000 people had been displaced since the beginning of September as fighting intensified across several frontlines. The UN has called on all sides to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law and prevent further escalation.
The renewed violence is also raising concerns over the security of shipping routes around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea, a vital passage for international trade.
UN officials have urged the parties to engage in dialogue and support efforts for a negotiated political settlement. The organisation has also warned that restrictions on movement and insecurity are making humanitarian operations more difficult.
The developments add another layer to a wider Middle Eastern security crisis that includes tensions involving Iran, Israel and shipping routes across the region.
