New Delhi, Sept 23:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States in December to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Florida, where US President Donald Trump will host the gathering on December 14 and 15.
If the visit goes ahead, Modi is likely to hold a bilateral meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the summit. The talks assume significance amid ongoing India-US discussions on trade and Washington’s threat of imposing a 100 per cent tariff on Indian imports over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.
Preparations are also underway for a possible Quad leaders’ meeting involving India, the US, Japan and Australia. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has indicated that Modi would be among Trump’s priority leaders for meetings during the summit.
Following the Florida visit, Modi is also likely to travel to Canada for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney. India and Canada are currently negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, and a meeting between the two leaders is expected around the G20 summit.
