Chennai, Sept 24:
The PMK has urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure stringent punishment for all those involved in the alleged sexual abuse of minor girls by Gem Granites businessman Veeramani and expand the investigation to include those who allegedly attempted to bring the case to a premature closure.
In a statement, PMK president and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss said reports emerging about the alleged abuse of minor girls from poor families in Chennai were shocking. He condemned the alleged attempts made earlier to help the accused escape despite evidence reportedly being available.
Anbumani said it was distressing that the alleged abuse had continued for several decades and that despite evidence being submitted to the police on October 6, 2025, sustained action was not taken. Instead, the police had reportedly approached the Chennai POCSO Special Court on February 18 seeking permission to drop the case, citing insufficient evidence.
The judge’s refusal to accept the request subsequently led to the arrest of several people connected with the case, he said, commending the court for ensuring that the matter was pursued. Anbumani demanded separate cases against those who allegedly abused the girls, aided or abetted the offences, or attempted to prematurely close the case.
He also called for the scope of the investigation to be expanded and expedited, irrespective of the status of those involved. Based on the findings of the investigation, the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act should also be modified if necessary, he said.
