The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it expected Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take an expeditious decision on petitions seeking the disqualification of 20 Trinamool Congress rebel MPs.
The petitions relate to the disqualification of MPs who are facing allegations under the anti-defection law. The issue came before the Supreme Court amid concerns over the delay in deciding the petitions.
The court indicated that while it could not directly instruct the Speaker on how to exercise the constitutional function, it expected the matter to be dealt with without undue delay.
The proceedings have brought renewed attention to the constitutional role of the Lok Sabha Speaker in deciding disqualification petitions under the anti-defection provisions.
