Tokyo, Sept 24:
At least nine people have died and four remain missing in Japan’s Kanto region after Typhoon Dujuan brought torrential rain, flooding and landslides, authorities said.
Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures were among the worst-hit areas. Several people were killed after landslides struck residential areas, while flooding affected homes and roads. Around 500 homes were damaged across Chiba, Kanagawa and Ibaraki prefectures, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.
The storm produced exceptionally heavy rainfall in parts of eastern Japan. Some locations recorded more than 800 millimetres of rain within 48 hours, creating dangerous conditions and triggering landslides.
Rescue and search operations continued in areas where people were believed to have been trapped by landslides. Authorities also dealt with transport disruptions and damage to infrastructure caused by the storm.
Typhoon Dujuan had moved northeast away from Japan’s Pacific coast by Tuesday night, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The storm was the 25th named storm of the year and struck during Japan’s Silver Week holiday period.
