Two senior IPS officers who were heading key positions in the Chennai Police Commissionerate when a complaint against Gem Granites owner R Veeramani involving alleged sexual abuse of minor girls first surfaced were transferred and placed on compulsory wait on Thursday.
According to an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K Manivasan, A Arun, ADGP, Tamil Nadu Police Academy, and N Kannan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, were transferred with immediate effect and placed on compulsory wait. The order did not specify the reasons for their transfer.
The development comes against the backdrop of allegations by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Scheduled Caste department leader Ranjan Kumar that he had submitted a complaint regarding the alleged offences to Kannan in November 2024, when he was serving as Additional Commissioner of Police, Chennai. Kumar had said that Kannan told him that he would take up the complaint after consulting Arun, who was then the Chennai Police Commissioner.
The case came to light after the police registered an FIR last year, stating that an anonymous letter and a pen drive allegedly containing evidence of sexual abuse had been received through a representative of a non-governmental organisation.
