Chennai, Sept 26:
Parents who have not yet registered their child’s name in the birth record have been given a final opportunity to do so until Saturday, September 26. The Tamil Nadu Public Health Department has stated that the deadline will not be extended further.
A birth certificate carrying the child’s name is an important document for several official purposes, including applying for Aadhaar, school admission, passport and visa, and making entries in the family card.
Under the existing birth registration rules, a birth is normally required to be registered within 21 days, with no registration fee during this period. If a birth was registered without a name, parents or guardians can generally add the name within 12 months by submitting a written declaration to the concerned registrar.
The government has provided a special opportunity for birth records registered without names before 2010, including records where the previously prescribed period for adding the name has already expired. The final deadline under this special provision is September 26, 2026.
Parents eligible under the special provision have been advised to make use of the opportunity and complete the registration process. They have also been advised to finalise the child’s name carefully before submitting the declaration, as changes to the name may not be permitted after registration.
The government has made it clear that a similar extension will not be provided in the future.
