Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 28:
Virat Kohli became only the second batter in men’s ODI cricket to score 15,000 runs, reaching the landmark during India’s first ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
Kohli reached the milestone in his 303rd ODI innings, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record of 377 innings. He thus reached 15,000 runs 74 innings faster than Tendulkar, with only the former India great ahead of him on the all-time ODI run-scoring list.
Kohli began the match on 14,941 ODI runs and needed 59 to reach the landmark. He achieved it while anchoring India’s chase of West Indies’ 295 for seven. Kuldeep Yadav had earlier taken four wickets for India.
Kohli’s latest achievement adds another milestone to a remarkable ODI career that began with his debut against Sri Lanka in 2008. He has also enjoyed considerable success against West Indies, having entered the series with more than 2,200 ODI runs against them, including nine centuries.
