Chennai, Sept 29:
The Tamil Nadu government is set to roll out a modernised free bicycle scheme for school students from December, with Chief Minister Vijay directing officials to begin distribution by the end of the month.
Under the scheme, 5,32,388 bicycles are to be procured at a cost of Rs 277 crore for students studying in Classes XI and XII in government and government-aided schools across the State. The scheme is being implemented through the Backward Classes Welfare Department.
A tender had earlier been floated for procurement of the bicycles, with September 28 fixed as the last date for submission. The deadline has now been extended to October 13.
The government has decided to provide bicycles with a modern design and several upgraded features. According to the details released by the department, the new bicycles will be lighter than those supplied during the previous regime while also being designed for durability.
Safety features have also been incorporated. Reflective stickers will be placed at the front and rear so that the bicycles are more visible at night and during periods of poor visibility.
The bicycles will also have an improved braking system. A larger carrier will be provided to enable students to carry their bags more conveniently.
Additional provisions have been made for carrying water bottles and books, according to the scheme details.
The bicycles will be supplied in different colours for boys and girls. Students will receive military-green coloured bicycles, while girl students will be provided with light-purple coloured bicycles.
The Chief Minister has directed officials to commence distribution towards the end of December.
The scheme is aimed at students studying in Classes XI and XII in government and government-aided schools. With more than 5.3 lakh bicycles proposed for procurement, the programme is expected to cover students across the State once the procurement process is completed.
The tender deadline extension to October 13 is the immediate next step before the procurement and subsequent distribution process gets under way.
