New Delhi, Oct 3:
Congress MP K C Venugopal has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him not to allow the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill to be taken up for passage until its Joint Parliamentary Committee completes a detailed examination.
Venugopal said the JPC had not undertaken sufficient consultation with stakeholders and urged the Speaker to extend the committee’s term if necessary so that affected organisations and other stakeholders could present their views.
The Congress leader’s intervention comes amid indications that the government could seek to move ahead with the legislation in the forthcoming Parliament session. The bill is currently being examined by the JPC.
Venugopal has sought wider consultation before the legislative process advances, arguing that the committee should have adequate time to examine the provisions and consider representations from stakeholders. The issue is expected to remain part of the political discussions ahead of the next session of Parliament.
