NEW DELHI:
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday petitions challenging the functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The petitions raise questions over alleged unilateral decision-making within the Election Commission and seek judicial scrutiny of the exercise. One of the pleas has also questioned the legality of the nationwide revision of electoral rolls.
The petitions come amid a wider political debate over the manner in which electoral rolls are being revised and concerns raised by Opposition parties over the possible exclusion of eligible voters.
The court’s hearing is expected to bring further focus on the constitutional and legal safeguards governing the preparation and revision of electoral rolls.
