Chennai, Oct 6:
Chennai Metro Rail Limited is moving towards introducing driverless train operations on the Phase II network, with the system expected to be implemented by the middle of 2027.
Initially, 15 trains will operate between Vadapalani and Poonamallee Bypass at 10-minute intervals. Each train will have a capacity to carry around 900 passengers and a maximum design speed of 80 kmph, though the average operating speed is expected to be around 32 kmph due to curves along the route.
The trains are equipped for Unattended Train Operation. However, during the initial phase, they will operate under Automatic Train Operation with two personnel on board. One will monitor braking while the other will oversee signals and emergencies.
CMRL is conducting overnight tests covering around 120 scenarios before seeking certification from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety. Once approved, train movement and door operations will be automated and supervised from the Operation Control Centre.
