Chennai, Oct 6:
Construction of the 3.2-km Teynampet-Saidapet elevated corridor is set to resume over the Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations after Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) cleared a revised design for the challenging stretch.
The work along Anna Salai had been stalled for several months over concerns regarding construction above the operational underground Metro stations. A Japanese consultant reviewed the design and recommended installing portal frames along a 300-metre stretch above the two stations at 15-metre intervals.
CMRL has now approved the revised plan, allowing the State Highways Department to proceed with the construction. About 2.3 km of the corridor has already been completed, with 50 of the proposed 69 piers erected.
The project runs for about 2.4 km above the Metro tunnel, including a 460-metre stretch directly over the Teynampet and Nandanam stations. The Metro tunnel is around 14-15 metres below Anna Salai, while the flyover foundations have been drilled only to about seven metres to avoid affecting the Metro infrastructure.
The Rs 621-crore project is expected to be completed by March 2027. Officials said installation of the portal frames alone could take three to four months.
