Chennai, October 8:
DMK Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson on Thursday accused the BJP-led Union government of facing resistance from vested interests over discussions on the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, and reiterated his party’s opposition to the proposed legislation.
With the Joint Committee on the FCRA Bill scheduled to meet on October 12 and 13, Wilson said an earlier proposal for committee members to visit the Supreme Court and meet the Chief Justice of India and other senior judges had been dropped following objections.
“There was some resistance from vested interests, and I clearly wrote a letter to the Committee, which was duly recorded,” Wilson said. He maintained that such a visit would have been constitutionally permissible and was not unusual. The committee eventually decided to cancel the meeting.
Wilson said the DMK had consistently opposed the proposed amendments since the party first raised its objections on April 3, 2006. He said he had also led delegations in his capacity as chairman of the Joint Action Forum on Minorities, an umbrella platform representing Christian organisations across the country, and raised concerns with the Union Home Minister before the Bill was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
“This amendment must go,” Wilson said, reiterating the party’s stand against the legislation.
The MP also criticised the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government over its decision to cancel the Parandur greenfield airport project and its proposal to construct a new Secretariat-Assembly complex along the Pattinapakkam coast in Chennai.
Alleging that the decisions were detrimental to public interests, Wilson said the proposed coastal complex could affect local communities and their traditional livelihoods. He accused the government of taking flawed policy decisions and said its actions were placing additional burdens on the common people.
